THE CHALLENGE

A House Disconnected

When a young family discovered this century-old cottage beside the parkland of Highgate, they fell in love with the setting rather than the house itself. Years of piecemeal additions had left the home fragmented, with awkward circulation, mismatched floor levels and little connection between its spaces. In addition to its quirky character, it no longer supported modern family life.

THE approach

Finding A Direction

Rather than erase the building's history, the design focused on bringing clarity and coherence to what already existed. The cottage's distinctive roofscape became the organising idea, transforming a series of disconnected additions into a unified architectural language. Levels, circulation and room relationships were carefully reconsidered to improve flow and functionality.

THE transformation

Living with Ease

Today, the house unfolds as a sequence of distinct yet connected experiences, from intimate, cosy rooms to a cathedral like, light-filled family space that opens to the garden and surrounding trees. Each room has been shaped around how the owners want to live and feel, creating a home that is both practical and emotionally resonant. The result is a calm, confident family home that balances character, and comfort.
